"A chardonnay that straddles a tight rope of racy acidity and sulphides, the latter just pinching the finish. But in the midst, intense citrus flavours, lots of lime accents, really juicy and mouth-watering with moreish savoury inputs. Ultimately, a good drink. 90/100"

Pale lemon to lime on the rim. Lemongrass, thyme and green apple aromatics. Good fruit intensity with orchard apples and a nice line of smoky bacon fat for character. Acid and phenolics guide it well and it fans out to quite a rich yet controlled finish. 90/100.

VINEYARD

The grapes for this wine come from Frank & Christine Minutellos oldest Chardonnay block planted to Penfolds Clone in 1981 at there Tooma Vineyard in the Maragle Valley of Tumbarumba. The Minutellos are pioneers of the Tumbarumba region being one of only 2 farmers to establish a vineyard in the early 80’s. The site has an elevation of 550m with a soft easterly aspect. Grown on decomposed granite soils.

SEASON

Harvested on the 2nd of March 2019. 2019 was a warm summer but Tumbarumba's altitude means a slow even ripening in spite of the heat. Yields were very low at 9.5T/Ha, helping produce a wine of great intensity.

TASTING NOTE

Complex nose with grapefruit, white nectarine, pastry and nougat aromas. Creamy soft palate of lemon curd, baked pastry and brioche flavours. Wrapped up in Tumbarumba’s hallmark acidity which gives great drive and length to the wine.

WINE STYLE

Cool climate Chardonnay with altitude.

WINEMAKING

Machine harvested. Juice was held on skins for an extended period to extract flavour and texture. Then pressed to mainly 5 year old French barrels. A small portion, <30% of new French hogs were also used. Wild fermentation, infrequent stirring. Out of barrel after 10 months in January 2020. Bottled 24th of June 2020 after a nice rest in tank on fine lees.

Stored well, this wine will cellar for the next 5 to 10 years.
