Grenache, Mourvèdre, Shiraz
Our Grenache and Mourvèdre are grown on the De Bortoli Shelley’s Vineyard on the eastern edge of the Rutherglen region. Our Shiraz however is grown on the De Bortoli Burgoyne's Vineyard also located on the Rutherglen region. Both sites have an interesting gravel, clay and alluvial soil mix with different aspects, which helps generate a different flavour profile.
The start of spring held promise with warmer than average temperatures but small and regular rain events meaning that growth was even and strong. In December and January temperatures were significantly higher than average with December being 3.5 degrees above and January being 5.7 degrees above the long term average. This placed a strain on the vines but with careful monitoring and irrigation the vines got through the January period with reduced berry size and yields but in reasonable condition. During the critical period when the berries softened and flavours developed in February and March, the temperatures remained slightly above average but without any extreme events for the remainder of the growing season. Careful vineyard management of both vine canopy and irrigation was the key.
Complex aromas and flavours of pepper, spice and red berry fruits. This full flavoured, well balanced blend is further enhanced by hints of vanilla, the result of maturation in French oak.
Each variety was made separately before blending to achieve this seamless blend. The Grenache and Mourvèdre fruit was fermented in small open fermenters with a gentle pump over regime to keep a bright and vibrant fruit profile. The Shiraz portion was selected from our most prosperous Shiraz parcels to help balance the fruit driven Grenache and structured Mourvèdre. The wine is aged in older French and American oak to give tightness and roundness on the palate whilst helping to soften the tannins, finishing with an expressive approachable wine.

Superb for drinking now, but can cellar nicely for up to 8 years.
Quite intense and dark garnet colour. A nose of black olives, plums and sage leaves. Fruit confected on entry, with a sour line of acid that jangles along the palate. Dark fruits sit underneath that edge and are matched to cinnamon and paprika spices. Tannins kick in and compress the flow leaving it short into the finish.The Real Review September 2020
